Background & experience

## Feeling passionate A clinician first — and it shows in every session

My career began at the bedside in Louisiana and Texas, where I learned cardiac care the way most nurses do: under pressure, in real time, with a monitor alarming and a patient who needed someone to know what the rhythm meant. That experience shaped everything about how I teach today.

I earned my BSN from Southern University, then completed my Doctor of Nursing Practice at the University of Arizona and board certification as an Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner. My doctoral work on provider adherence to hypertension guidelines in African American adults was nominated for the AANC Outstanding DNP Project and earned the Mary Opal Wolanin Award for excellence in nursing with vulnerable populations.

Clinically, I've practiced outpatient cardiology — coronary artery disease and ischemia, heart failure, lipid and hypertension management, and arrhythmias — and I currently serve as a cardiovascular Medical Science Liaison, translating cardiac science for physicians and advanced practice providers.

Along the way, colleagues and students kept pulling me aside with the same request: “Can you explain this to me the way you just explained it to the patient?” So I started drawing. Cartoons, analogies, and stories — because a bundle branch block explained through a picture beats a paragraph every single time.

What began as unit teaching grew into precepting, clinical education leadership at Medical City Dallas, an adjunct faculty role at West Coast University, and finally Dr. G the NP, LLC — a national clinical education practice and approved continuing nursing education provider.

My why

## I teach because I remember not knowing

Confidence is contagious.

I remember standing in front of a monitor, terrified of being wrong in front of someone more experienced than me. I remember cardiac lectures that made me feel less capable, not more. And I remember the one educator who slowed down, drew me a picture, and changed how I saw the heart forever.

That is the experience I try to recreate in every room I'm invited into. When a clinician truly understands what they're looking at, patients get recognized sooner, escalated faster, and treated better. Teaching one nurse well ripples out to every patient they will ever care for.

### Nobody learns while feeling stupid

I teach in a room where questions are welcome and confusion is normal. Psychological safety is the prerequisite for learning anything hard — and cardiac care is hard.

### Complexity is a teaching failure, not a learner failure

If a concept isn't landing, the explanation needs to change. I rebuild content until it makes sense to the person in front of me.

### Education should change practice by Monday

Every session ends with something learners can apply on their next shift — not just something they enjoyed hearing.
